The Hope Fire Department received a very special momento recently. When the department extinguished the fire a couple of years ago at the old Fink/Shanhouse building, they saved many downtown businesses including the SWS Etching Company. SWS had just received some new stock to work on when the fire broke out and asked Fire Chief Dale Glanton to do his best to save their building. SWS escaped any minor injury from the fire and owners Steve Randall and Warren Hansen presented Chief Glanton with a beautiful engraved axe to express their appreciation. Chief Glanton says he is quite proud of the gift and will display it inside the main fire department office. The gift is quite appropriate since the fire deparment saved a good bit of the north side of town on Monday (2-8) when fire destroyed an historic home at 511 North Main and windy conditions threatened to spread the fire to other structures. The department stayed in the are much of the day and night extinguishing flare-ups and cinders that blew from the fire. Hope Vice-Mayor Steve Montgomery joined the firemen for the photo.
