HOPE – The Hope High School Robotics Team is seeking some $3,000 to fund its 2016-2017 competition season, beginning with an aluminum can recycling project on Dec. 17.
Robotics coach Kathy Knight said the fundraising drive is intended to raise money for the team’s March competition.
“We are beginning our fundraising, and one of the first things our team would like to do is an aluminum can recycling drive,” Knight said.
Robotics team members will accept donations of used aluminum cans at the Hope High School MAC center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. Additional collection dates are currently set for Jan. 14 and March 4, according to Knight.
The HHS robotics program competed in the “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (FIRST) Robotics contest in Searcy and the Arkansas Rock City FIRST Robotics regional contest last year.
Each competition requires the construction of a robot to specifications set for that particular contest format.
The HHS team raised some $4,000 last year, part of which was used to purchase a 3-D printer for the HHS STEM Academy. The device was used to manufacture custom parts for the HHS robot.
Competition formats require robots to overcome obstacles and engage fixed fortification structures while fending off potential adversaries. Particular formats will require specific robotic functions which must be designed and constructed by the students.
The HHS team built two robots for its competitions in 2015, its second entry advancing through the first day of competition in Little Rock, only to be denied an opportunity to continue by a power failure at Barton Coliseum after a car crashed into a power pole outside the event.
Team members include Hanna McCorkle, Mayra Garcia, Johnny Luna, Jerry Noble, Jacob Gunn, Toby Huckabee, Dalton Hulett, Dalton Kenworthy, Clarence Mayberry, Benjamin Knight, Tristain Martin, Josh Gonzales, Kelsey Reedy, Maggie Haynes, Margaret Mayberry, Jacqueline Cully, Kaitlyn Hooker, and Jacob Woeckener.
Sponsors include HHS Assistant Principal Mike Radebaugh, Israel Diaz, and Knight.
