Over 7,000 people in Hempstead County cast their votes in the general election on Tuesday November 9th. Over 3,100 people voted in Nevada County. The two counties elected a new District 3 State Representative. Danny Watson deafeated incumbent Brent Talley 3,840 to 2,698 in Hempstead County and in Nevada County 1,512 to 1,168. A Libertarian candidate, Cecil Anderson, polled a total of 156 votes between the two counties.
Hempstead County elected its first Republican County Clerk Tuesday. Karen Mitchell Smith polled 3,576 votes compared to 3,223 for Eva J. Morehead.
Two long-time incumbent J.P's in Hempstead County were defeated for re-election. District 7 incumbent Larry Byers was defeated by Mikki Curtis 432 to 342. District 8 J.P. Ronnie Kidd fell to C. David Clayton 676 to 235. Incumbent J.P. for District 5 Olen Dorman fended off challenger Eric McNiel 357 to 181
There were two contested Hope City Board races. Incumbent Kiffinea Talley easily kept her seat in Ward 2, defeating challenger Jay Kopecky 141 to 54. The open seat in Ward 5 being vacated by Hope Mayor Dennis Ramsey's retirement was won by Dr. Trevor Coffee. He defeated Sharon Caldwell 225 to 168.
In Ozan Rosiland White defeated Sharvanta (Lee) White for mayor 19 to 16. Catherine Stuart Rowe defeated Rebecca O. Dye for City Recorder in Washington 43 to 24.
In the presidential race, Hempstead County voted for Donald Trump 4,391 compared to Hillary Clinton 2,371. In the U.S. Senate race, Hempstead County voted for John Boozman over challenger Conner Eldridge 4,158 to 2,348. In the 4th District Congressional race, Bruce Westernman took Hempstead County over Libertarian Kerry Hicks 4,707 to 1,436.
In the ballot issues, Hempstead County voted for Issue #1 4,798 to 1,875, Issue #2 4,739 to 1,928, and Issue #3 4,881 to 1,808. Hempstead County voted against the Medical Marijuana issue, Issue #6 3,566 tp 3,.277.
Nevada County had only one local race besides State Representative. In the Rosston City Treasurer's race, Dixon defeated Jensen 39 to 38. Nevada County went for Trump over Clinton in the presidential race 2001 to 1,156. In the Senate race, Nevada County cast 1,881 votes for incumbent John Boozman compared to 1,115 for Eldridge and 122 for Gilbert. In the 4th District Congressional Race, Bruce Westerman polled 2,036 votes in Nevada County compared to 822 for Hicks. And in the Associate Judge's race in Nevada County, MeMenis polled 1,551 voted compared to 1,202 for Klappenbach.
On the Issues, Nevada County approved Issues #1, #2, and #3 by wide margins. In the Issue #6 polling, Nevada County narrowly approved that measure 1,562 to 1,544.
